Artist Bio:
Kuebel’s work is connected to a sculptural thinking style. A key motif in her practice is the idea of a knot, where two parts can be combined, in a defined volume, in numerous ways. Her subject matter is often people, social situations and creatures with an animal-like look, but she does not relate her work to a certain reality; it never has a background or defined setting.
Her preferred medium is large-scale, handmade woodcuts. As an international artist who has made work during various stages of life, in a variety of locations, she has needed to work with necessity, and wood and paper are materials which she has found to be accessible almost everywhere in the world. Her preferred colour to work with is black, which also happens to be the most readily-available colour of printing ink. She is inspired by the physical, manual aspect of woodcut, engaging with the material, the fibres and the natural structures; which she wants to be visible in her works. For this reason, she only does small editions, as with each print, ink is absorbed into the texture of the wood, producing a darker result.
Kuebel has exhibited widely, in Austria, Switzerland, France, the Balkan areas and the U.S.A. She is represented by the New Orleans based gallery Jonathan Ferrara, is a former member of Xylon Switzerland and current member of Xylon Austria: a group of printmakers who focus on woodcut. Kuebel obtained two Mag.art (MA) degrees from Academy of Fine Art Vienna/ Art Education and Painting. Her works were selected for ARTMaze Magazine and published in Xylon Switzerland.
