Scott Baxter

Black and white portrait of artist Scott Baxter

Throughout the development of my artistic practice, I have always aware of the lack of queer presence in galleries, institutions, and major collections. My work attempts to respond to this deficiency of visibility by placing queer bodies at forefront of my practice. The works I make stem from an initial dialogue with, and input from, the sitter to produce settings, metaphors, narratives, and imagery. Although photography is at the core of my practice, printmaking is the language I use to propagate my work. For me, printmaking has an important connection to the historical visual language of the disenfranchised and marginalised, who used zines, posters, and pamphlets to spread political voice creatively. - Scott Baxter

Scott Baxter (he/him) explores LGBTQ+ identity and imagery utilising digital technologies that are now a part of everyday identity creation. He responds to historical, and current, queer (in)visibility by subverting familiar social allegories to create altered contexts for queer realities and agency to exist through open-ended narratives. Baxter graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2015 with a first-class honours degree in Intermedia Art. His current practice focuses on silkscreen printing and photo-plate lithography. Baxter has received a number of awards: the Barns-Graham Travel Award; the Katherine Michaelson Dissertation Prize; and a Creative Scotland VACMA in 2023. Selected exhibitions include Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, London; Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, London; ARCUS Pride Exhibition, London; RSA: New Contemporaries, Edinburgh; and New Scottish Artists at DRAF / Fleming Collection, London. His work is held in the Aberdeen Galleries and Museums permanent collection, and private collections in Europe.
