Frances Potworowska-Stanfield
Potworowska-Stanfield's work consists of abstracted figures exploring ideas around sexuality, gender and power-play. She begins by drawing from observation or images on her phone ceaselessly reshaping and repeating motifs and figures through drawing and printmaking. She works back and forth between drawing, printmaking and painting seeking to retain a certain energy in the colour and mark making. Printmaking, particularly monotype, feeds her momentum between drawing and painting - its serendipitous and technical nature both help guide the work between chance and control leading to complex compositions of layered texture, planes and line.
Frances was born in London, UK in 1988. She lives and works in South East London. She went to secondary school, college and did an Art Foundation in Portsmouth, UK. She received a first class degree in Illustration at University College Falmouth in 2011. In 2014 she was offered a scholarship place at The Royal Drawing School Central where she met Lucy McGeown and Luisa-Maria MacCormack - co-founders of the London Drawing Group. She has taught drawing online to over 80,000 people worldwide since 2020.
